Upward progressions
Don't you just love Magazine's "Shot by Both Sides"? What's not to like, really. Still, I prefer Buzzcocks' "Lipstick". Notice anything similar about them? (There is, but the explanation isn't particularly sinister.)
It's entirely arguable, you know, that nothing is so central to modern pop as Buzzcocks, that is, the original Shelley/Devoto axis and the many artists connected in sub-Kevin Baconian proximity thereto. I mean, seriously. Fill in any blanks as you see fit.

The Cure's Robert Smith was a Banshee briefly. Now if you can make a connection to the YMO/Sylvian/Bill Nelson axis (through TMC/4AD maybe?), you might very well achieve world domination.
BTW, were you one of the people touting Patrick O'Brian at Crooked Timber a few months back? If so, thanks – I just finished Post Captain (see my insufferably pretentious post here).

Shot by both sides is indeed a fine song, and a Stereolab fan as well, I like your musical taste.
(wondered here from afoe btw)

And despite the little box saying my email address won't be displayed, there it is, to be harvested. Nevermind, Gmail's spam catching's quite good. That should also be wandered in the last comment, obviously.

Simon, I'm mortified; but it's Typepad, not me. Feel free to type "a@b.com" or whatever; I'm aghast at the thought my web interface would force you to become fodder for the spambots.
Dave, don't recall if I touted what the other half calls "those seafaring novels" at CT, but as I tout them every chance I get it is entirely possible. (Here is what I wrote about them on this site, which once got me into trouble with Patrick Nielsen Hayden.) Your own post is not pretentious at all, BTW, beyond that element of pretence that the unwashed (I suspect) would find to inhere by definition in any post on the subject of the canon. (Good heavens, did I really just write that? Apparently I did.) Also: I thought the Parfüm film great fun, but Lola rennt is far better. Germans usually do better when they aren't trying to be deep. Difficult temptation for Germans to avoid, I grant you.
