Three important observations about sport

  1. It's hard for many people, particularly in the USA, to understand that a match ending 0:0 can be an edge-of-the-seat nailbiter. Yet that's what yesterday was. The Eintracht were away to Bayern Munich. For Frankfurt, this was very similar to spending 90 minutes in a tank with eleven hungry sharks. You're not going to beat them, but if you can escape without being bitten, you fall down on your knees and thank any gods you might happen to have. Most of the match was on Frankfurt's half of the pitch, of course, yet despite a fair number of scares they pulled it off. Mind you, one understands how what we perceived as suspense and thrills would have been, to the FCB followers, frustration. That sound you hear is the Bundesliga's tiniest violin.
  2. This morning our wee Sam played his first match with tackling. And not before time. For weeks now, I've had only to turn my back, and there was a violent dwarf hurling himself round my knees. Thank goodness he can now expend his energies on other seven year olds. He and his teammates did fantastically well, by the way. They beat Heidelberg -- the powerhouse of German rugby (such as that is) -- twice in two matches. Sam himself grounded four tries and tackled like a slightly smaller Lomu.
  3. My friend Bren is off to Africa with Kick4Life. He'll be playing football in Lesotho, raising money for Aids education and relief and blogging about it as well. Not a bad cause to shower with a few simoleons, is it? Well, get out your wallets and off you go, then.

Hockey fans may be satisfied with 0:0. Baseball eventually produces a winner, but consider a 1:0 game that's decided in extra innings, and that can be a nailbiter for hours at a time.
